Poet and novelist born in Harun, a village in the mountains of Kurdistan, he settled in Paris in 1987 after studying journalism in Ankara and has lived there ever since.
Author of about fifteen books, published mainly by Le Castor Astral, he has received numerous awards: the Prix Mallarmé and the Académie Française’s Prix Théophile Gautier (Juste un pont, sans feu), the Prix Yvan Goll (Les chemins du nocturne), the Prix Benjamin Fondane (Élégies pour ma mère), as well as the Prix spécial l’Orénoque Robert Ganzo for his body of work.
His novel À la source, la nuit received a special mention in the Prix des Cinq Continents de la Francophonie. His collection, Commencements, published in 2025 by Le Castor Astral, was recently awarded the Grand Prix de poésie de langue française Léopold Sédar Senghor and the Grand Prix de poésie de la ville de Lyon Roger-Kowalski.
